Given - or taken?

There's a new memorial in Barton on Humber to soldiers who died in the battle of the Somme. It's nicely done. But I have a problem with the phrase so often used: 'who gave their lives' as if it was a willing gift. 'Had their lives taken away' might be more fitting.
