"Will these hands ne'er be clean?"
While out working in the garden I found a Bloody-nosed Beetle (Timarcha tenbricosa) which, when placed on my hand, promptly exuded several drops off lurid haemolymph (the insect equivalent of blood). The substance is said to be foul-tasting and therefore to repel predators, and the colour acts as a warning signal. After producing 4 small blobs the beetle appeared to have run out of juice.
Unlike Lady Macbeth I had no trouble ridding my hand of the blood spots.
Extra: no connection with beetles but there seems to be a whats-on-your-plate? thing going around so here are the cheese and wild garlic scones I made for tea.
