Ashdon Halt
Ashdon Halt was opened on the line from Saffron Walden to Bartlow in 1911. An old Great Eastern Railway carriage was stripped out and fitted with benches as a waiting room on a cinder platform. The carriage looks like an 1892 model but I may be wrong about that.
The line was closed in 1964 and this sad relic was been slowly rotting away ever since. It's a bit of a tribute to the quality of the materials and construction that anything survives at all considering nothing has been done to it for 50-odd years.
This afternoon I was invited to speak at a local U3A meeting... I met some lovely people and throughly enjoyed the afternoon.
