An Amazing Building

Manningham Mills - also known as Lister's Mills.
The building of this mill in Bradford was completed in 1873, and it was the largest textile mill in North England and the biggest Silk mill in the world. It employed 11,000 men, women and children.
Unfortunately the silk and velvet business decreased considerably during the 1980s. Stiff foreign competition and changing textile trends such as the increased use of artificial fibres were the reasons. In 1992 the mills were closed.
The mills are Grade 2* listed buildings, built in the Italianate style of Victorian architecture. In 2004 a £100 million project was launched to convert the buildings into apartments and business space..  131 apartments have been competed and the second phase is now underway to provide a further 191 and more business space.
The chimney is 249 feet (76 m) high, and can be seen from most areas of Bradford and the surrounding district.
