Wetlands
I read that since Roman times it is thought that England has lost 90% of its natural wetlands. And of course a large part of this loss was in the 20C.
The RSPB is working hard to recreate areas of standing water and Reed beds which are vital to a large range of insects, mammals and birds. In particular they re keen to extend the habitat for Bittern, Marsh Harrier, Avocets and Water Rails all of which we have at nearby Leighton Moss.
The photo shows the area at Silverdale Moss which they have developed over the past five years.
It was over this Reed bed that the Starlings murmurated a couple of months ago.
