Mystery Stamp
a bit of stamp info.
from time to time i help my husband id a postage stamp from his grandfather's collection. it is a fascinating way to learn history. this one was a puzzler for about a week.
we have a scott's catalogue, but i couldn't find it there. i looked in greece and other countries that would have produced a stamp with greek writing. then, i translated the greek from the top of the stamp and googled it. couldn't find it. finally, i translated the bottom writing below the lady on the stone and wallah, found it.
it is a revolutionary issue from crete in 1905. the picture is an allegory of crete enslaved. the stamp is not listed in scott's and the info i found said was of no postal value (there is a postmark), but was issued to collectors for sale.
