Today's the day ....................... for a bit of geology

I don't know if you know this already - but way back in the mists of time, Will and I were geology students?

We studied at different universities and when we met, we were completely unaware that we had done the same thing.  But I digress - that's a story for another time!  Suffice to say, we both get quite excited when there are interesting geological formations to be seen.  Although because it all was such a long time ago, usually we need to consult the appropriate books to remind ourselves what we are looking at.  Shropshire is an absolute geologist's paradise, containing as it does some of the oldest rocks to be found anywhere in the world.  And all the different rock formations are so nicely reflected in the landscape that (in theory) it's easy to make sense of everything.

Today we found ourselves in a little roadside quarry where we thought we could see a very clear unconformity between folded sedimentary rocks overlain by darker, less contorted bands (see extra).  And Will found lots of fossils - like these little brachiopod shells - indicating that the sediments had been laid down in the sea that existed here in the Silurian period.
