Haymarket

Scenes like this are fast disappearing in Sydney. Haymarket was a seedy, downbeat precinct which used to be a major centre of commercial markets, warehouses and nefarious goings-on (so they tell me) and the like. The markets have largely moved away, apart from retail vestiges of what once had been here. The soaring price of urban property combined with rapidly rising populations and Asian investment is threatening to overwhelm the area with massive redevelopment. Qnly a few blocks from here, cityscapes that had remained undisturbed for generations have suffered wholesale obliteration in favour of high rise buildings, open parkland and tourist edifices. A good thing? I am not entirely sure. Character is often an indefinable thing which we only recognise ... once it's gone.
