Plotting Nuclear War
Took a trip to the 'Secret Bunker' nr. Anstruther in Fife. A former cold war facility that was initially used by the RAF and Observer Corps in the 1950's finally closing in 1993 after its final years as a Scottish Office bunker to run what would be left of Scotland after a nuclear war.
It's a really thought provoking journey deep underground and to the curators' credit there is a small CND exhibition too.
The main Scottish Office operations room has a simple desk and telex machine for each Government department. The Chief Scientific Officer's room has this glass screen for plotting out nuclear fall-out. The patterns were strangely beautiful and terrifying.
