La vida de Annie

By Annie

Tortuga.

Walking the dogs round the waterside perimeter path round the village, Buster suddenly went into a barking frenzy, more than normal that is. What he found on the path was this chap, seemingly with nowhere to go as on one side was a sheer drop onto rocks, and the other an equally steep elevation with dense scrubland. Worried he/she might fall, or be attacked by dogs who aren't all-bark-and-no-trousers, I took the creature to a lower part of the track where there was accessible foliage to hide in, and no dangerous drop. All the way back I wasn't sure if this was the right thing to do: did the creature have a destination in mind and I set it back? Should I have found a garden to put it in? As we finally approached the apartment I was astounded to see a tortoise of the same size and markings walking along the road towards us. I wasn't sure if it was the same one, as getting up there would have involved steep steps, a long walk and crossing several roads, but couldn't just leave it there to be run over by the bin lorry, so popped it over the wall into the garden. There it devoured half a lettuce and a huge strawberry before going to sleep under a pile of dead leaves under a bush.
Buster is not sure what to make of it after trying to taste a foot and scratching his mouth on those claws. He now keeps a respectful distance.
