St. Cross Mill
The County Town of the Isle of Wight, Newport lies on the River Medina which is navigable to the sea at Cowes and was once an important port. Lukely Brook which runs into the Medina was a source of fresh water for the town, and was harnessed as energy for seven mills. The name Lukely is extremely ancient and means 'stream of the shining way'.
Located in the oldest part of Newport and the last mill on the brook is the St. Cross Mill which is probably the oldest milling site on the island. It's last use until 1939 was as a feed store for Fisk and Fisher as shown on this sign.
The wall of the mill is in a 6 foot wide alleyway hence the acute angle needed to photograph it. A modern addition are two CTV cameras one of which watched me taking this bliphoto.
