The Slow Train...
Nigel Gresley's express passenger locomotive Flying Scotsman takes a leisurely amble through the Sussex countryside on the middle day of its 7-day Flying Scotsman - Flying South Gala visit to the Bluebell Railway.
This is the 1:50 train from East Grinstead to Sheffield Park - a 40-minute journey over an 11-mile stretch of line, making an average speed of 16.5 m.p.h. - seen passing under Three Arch Bridge, a little to the south of Horsted Keynes Station at 14:15 this afternoon.
The locomotive was working 'tender first' toward Sheffield Park, so if you want to see what the 'backside' of the engine looks like - what the Scotsman wears under its kilt, so to speak - then look no further than today's 'Extra', to see the initial view that I (and the other 15-20 people waiting on the bridge) had of the approaching train...
