Above And Beyond...

Trellech

It was due to be a nag free day with Mrs BB starting her new job, but a few minutes of leaving the house she was back; the person she was due to shadow had her husband (in his 50's) admitted to hospital last night with his first asthma attack.

As the weather was good she wanted to do a walk and see some bluebells, so we headed to Trellech in Monmouthshire to do a long walk through an ancient woodland. They were out but not as good as last year or the year previous.

Trellech (can be spelled 23 different ways!) is a VERY interesting place. In former times, Medieval Trellech, founded by the de Clare family in 1245,  was the largest urban settlement in Wales outstripping the likes of Cardiff and Chepstow, with a population a quarter of that of London!!

The village gets its name from the three large Neolithic monoliths Tri-lech) in the village (called The Harold Stones) and still has a Motte & Bailey Castle mound (shown in the blipfoto to the left of the medieval church). It was also very busy in the Roman period. The village also houses a virtuous well that was a place of pilgrimage in medieval times.

The blipfoto shows most of the village with the 'lost city' (excavated ruins) of Trellech just out of the photograph.
