Oxford Circus Station, London Underground
This is the second Underground Station at Oxford Street, the first was opened by the Central London Railway in July 1900, and this one by the Baker Street and Waterloo Railway in March 1906.
These of course became the Central and the Bakerloo Lines respectively.
This fine example of Edwardian tiling in the then prevalent Arts and Crafts style, was designed by Leslie Green. Green was appointed architect for the underground Electric Railways Company of London (UERL) in 1903 to design stations for their three underground railways (yes three!) then under contraction: the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway (GNP&BR) the Baker Street and Waterloo Railway (BS&WR) and Charing Cross, Euston and Hampstead Railway (CC&HHR).
Green used steel frames for the buildings, which was then a new form of construction imported from the USA.
Alas Green's health broke down under the strain of producing designs and supervising construction for so many stations, and he died of TB in August 1908. most of his stations fortunately survive.
