My favourite museum
This is the Sir John Soane's Museum in London.
I upload from my mobile so won't link to its website yet but will in due course. John Soane was an architect and collector and he purpose-built these houses to hold and display his collection. I especially like the Picture room. It probably "only" measures 8m2 but he managed to hang a big size Canaletto and "the rake's progress" by Hogarth. He basically doubled/trippled the space by introducing hinged doors that have pictures on the out-and inside and on one side of the room there is even a further hinged door which then opens up into a further space. It's ingenious and I want to go back again and again to discover more details on the paintings.
It was a beautiful day so I walked from Lincoln's Inn Fields to St Paul's, across the Thames to the Tate Modern on to Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery. There are so many paintings there that initially I was overwhelmed and didn't know where to start. I first went to see the Metamorphosis where three contemporary artists were given the task to interpret three paintings by Titian (two of them used to hang in Edinburgh). That was interesting but then I went back and concentrated on the 1800-1900 section and discovered old favourites of mine that I didn't even know "lived" at the National Gallery.
After a full day it was nice to come back and relax with the family.
