Breaking Waves
The Nor'west was already revving up when I opened my eyes at 6.45 this morning, the sky pink and the wind careering through our valley.
After abandoning my planned visit to Greenpark Flats to shoot some birdlife, I chose to turn left and head for Wairewa and Birdlings Flat. After capturing a lovely sunrise over Lake Forsyth, I headed for the boulder and pebble beach of Birdlings Flat.
It's a slightly ramshackle settlement, but boy does it offer a host of photographic opportunities. Whether its flotsam on the pebbles, breaking waves, fisherman beach casting or just even some of the rusting machinery backing onto the the many baches, sheds and houses, Birdlings (as we locals call it) has it all.
For this shot, I walked right down to the base of the cliffs, choosing to use my trusty ND4 and CPL in tandem for a longer exposure to smooth the crashing breakers. Whilst filter combo vignetted a bit at this FL, I've added a little bit more to disguise it rather than crop. I hope it captures a little bit of the power of the sea at this often abandoned beach which sometimes feels like it's on the edge of the world.
