Weighing Witches
During the witch hunts in the 16th century the small town of Oudewater became famous for its weighhouse where people accused of witchcraft could prove their innocence. It was believed that witches had to be extraordinarily light to be able to fly on a broomstick, and if the scales showed that your body weight was in proportion to your built you were quite obviously not a witch. Luckily the citizens of Oudewater were honest people, and the scales were not rigged.
Even today you can get weighed there, and now my children and I have official certificates that we are not witches. I am almost a bit disappointed.
