Rangefinders

Ripon | North Yorkshire, UK

J has always been keen to have a range cooker in the new kitchen. So we duly ordered one of a particular brand (American owned, for the record) from a retailer in Harrogate about a month and a half ago.

We planned the kitchen around this type of cooker and everything is falling into place – as you know. We’d been told the cooker would be scheduled for delivery at the beginning of this week. I rang the retailer to find out exactly when. They rang back to say the manufacturer hadn’t actually scheduled when our cooker would even hit the production line.

So, we had a re-think. Checked Which Magazine for reviews and were actually quite impressed with another brand. We found a retailer in another North Yorkshire town, Ripon.

Off we trotted and had a look. To be honest, we didn’t think it really hit the mark compared with the one we have on order. Ditched the idea of taking up the offer from the Harrogate retailer for a refund.

Out of interest we asked the Ripon shop how much they would quote for the cooker we ordered in Harrogate:

“Ah, well, it would be a special order (they all are – the factory make them from scratch when orders are placed...) and then we’d have to deliver (their ad says they deliver free anywhere in North Yorkshire...). Well to make it worth our while...”

They quoted 300 quid more than the list price. Let them dream.
