The Edge of the Wold

Cowslip dew

It was a cool, beautifully clear morning with a heavy dew.  After the obligatory walk to the top of the Knott we went on to the Cowslip field.  The show hasn't reached its peak yet, but it was pretty good.  There had been a light frost overnight, and it was still coating the vegetation in the shadow of the anthills.  The morning sun lifting over the treetops made for good back lighting and dewy bokeh.

On the way back, I saw my first speckled wood butterflies of the year, and the early purple orchids on Heathwaite are in flower.  It does seem like a good year for blackcaps, adding to the chorus of willow warblers, chiffchaffs, song thrushes and many others.  I did wonder at the early morning runner who went by, earphones stuffed in his ears, rhythmic music pulsing and perfectly oblivious to the woodland sound garden.  Why?
