Courtil de Bas Lane
Today has been another day of glorious sunshine. We took the opportunity to empty our fish pond and give it a scrub. We caught 43 fish, mostly goldfish, but also two koi carp which we've had for over 20 years and are massive. They and we are now enjoying nice clear water. This afternoon we went for a cycle ride to collect blackberries at La Garenne. On our return I spotted an interesting looking gate post. (reminicent of my Acorn blip last Thursday). On closer inspection it appeared that there was an old weight on top of the post. It is made of stone and has an iron ring through it and the inscription LXX. It seemed to me that it was not heavy enough to be 70 pounds, but perhaps I'm wrong. I've looked up a bit of info on old Guernsey weights and measures:
Le poids de paris ancien (ancient Paris weight), or le poids de marc, which is the Amsterdam and Guernsey weight: 24 grains = 1 dernier; 3 derniers = 1 gros; 8 gros = 1 once; 8 onces = 1 marc; 2 marcs = 1 pound or livre, (poids de marc, or Guernsey lb) - (100 Guernsey lb are aproximately 108 English lb). Perhaps the stone is 70 marcs.
