I meant to go

I meant to go
walking
today, up along hills
the meadow-lands
behind my home
town
where maybe
well, maybe a lark
would helicopter its song
above my footsteps
but I never did
I slept
late
last night's beer's
stale
harvest
in the air of my room
I went out
to shatter them
in the bottle bank
late light
in the wind
catching the pink
of cherry blossom
parched
I take what drink
the Spring
will give
a sudden
dunnock flits
among the tangle of hedges.
