A foxy extra
For a birding weekend we also got to see a few mammals- starting with an otter swimming down the river, followed by a beaver , swimming down another river, and a muskrat in a creek ,with the fox in a field as we drove home. The extra is a gallinule behind a bunch of reeds. All in all somewhere around 75 species of birds spotted and a few more heard. The surprises that I never expected to see were the pelican, and even more of a surprise was the trumpeter swan. Apparently Canadian wildlife biologists were breeding them and released them in Ottawa ( if I got this right) and they are spreading in the NE and a few are spotted in Montezuma now .I forgot to inquire as to whether this is in winter or migration season in spring.
