Na na na na na na bat hawk!
After another day of going up and down the river looking for wildlife (and failing to see a whole pygmy elephant, though we saw an ear and a bum), we visited the Gormantong caves. This is where they harvest the swiftlet nests for birds nest soup.
Having visited, I wouldn't go anywhere near birds nest soup with a spoon. It's like something out of a horror film in there. The floor is covered in swiftlet and bat droppings and consequently, every dark corner is full of cockroaches and very poisonous centipedes.
An amazing sight that is more suitable for the squeamish is the millions of bats leaving the caves at dusk. They come out in a constant stream for about an hour, and they form almost a sine wave in the air. This probably has something to do with the bat hawks that are swooping around attempting to get a bat supper.
