Reptiles

This is a nice friendly little lizard that I found next to one of the cabins at Tabin.

I've included an extra of a pig tailed macaque (which are pretty much everywhere) that I took from the restaurant veranda whilst we were playing cards (it was too hot and humid to venture out). You might have thought it's nice and safe in the restaurant, not so much. About 10 minutes after the macaques passed through, I heard a thud on the floor next to me. It was a lizard, much like the one pictured. A second later a snake landed in my lap! I understandably scrambled out of my chair backwards as fast as possible. If you don't know whether a snake is dangerous or not, that's a natural reaction! The snake didn't like that much so had a good go at striking for my leg, it got a bit of trouser. The terrified little guy (is a metre long little?) then disappeared down a crack in the floor sharpish. It turns out it was a paradise tree snake, which are amazing creatures. One of the hotel staff said it was "only a bit venomous". Reassuring.

Though it was definitely more reassuring than when we saw a green pit viper in the jungle and the guide said that you have 45 minutes to live if you get bitten. In answer to how long it takes to get to a hospital: "Oh, about 2 hours".
