Bonus!

One bonus of running a moth trap is sometimes the moths caught in the trap overnight will lay a batch of eggs in the egg boxes, or in the little plastic pot I leave them in before release. 
A couple of weeks ago while emptying the trap I noticed a dark smudge on one of the egg boxes, which on closer inspection proved to be a clutch of minute, black first instar larvae (about 50 in total). anyway I cut out the piece of egg box they were on, popped it in a pot with some apple leaves and this is the result, a good clutch of Hebrew character Orthosia gothica larvae, feeding well and growing by the day. Hopefully I will be able to release some of them, but I shall be keeping a few so I can make more photographic records.
