Barnstaple's Long Bridge

Walked over the Long Bridge today to enjoy coffee with friends in town. It is chilly - back to winter coat!
Barnstaple's Long Bridge is a medieval bridge, one of the largest in Britain.  It is a grade 1 listed building and an ancient monument.  The date of the very first bridge is unclear but in 1274 a will left money for upkeep....so it is very old!  The extra shows the bridge and some of the old buildings along the river Taw.
Luckily there is now a new bridge so some of the traffic avoids the town.
The River Taw has been high this week; you can see how little room there is below the arches (16 in all).  Canoeists were enjoying paddling through though - missed that shot! .
