Continuity

When the Coritani settled this land 5000 years ago they were mostly interested in one thing - farming land. They cleared the post-glacial forests for fields. But when they got to this spot, they decided not to bother. This boggy north-facing slope was so unpromising that they left it alone. But when the forest was gone, building materials and fuels got harder to find, so they started to coppice the Ash and Wych elm woodland. And they kept on coppicing it, leaving some coppice stools tens of metres across. And the coppicing goes on. The bluebells? They are the icing on the cake.
