Road To The Past
Today started with a view of fresh snow on the mountain tops that I can see in the distance from the house. That explained why it was so cold last night. The day was bright and still so I suggested a drive out to see the autumn colours. This is the entrance to what was once a forestry village at Golden Downs, south of where I live. Only the beautiful trees remain. The houses, offices and workshops no more. Pine trees are still planted on the surrounding hills and their dark green contrasts with the beautiful deciduous trees still standing. (see extra) I think it is good the current forest owners have kept the strip of amenity trees beside the highway. The government purchased land in the Motueka Valley to establish an exotic timber supply as an alternative to the dwindling native forest resources. The first plantings were in 1927. We drove home following the Motueka River. A lovely exploring time which is what I wanted to do in retirement.
