Mary Rose

Had a fantastic day with my parents at the Mary Rose Exhibition. A new museum opened last year, and it is seriously impressive!

Last time I saw the Mary Rose was within a few years of it being raised. It was in a makeshift shed, and being sprayed with water and preservative. It has now been moved to a more upright position, and the accompanying exhibition looks at artefacts found within the wreck, as well as the process of underwater archaeology, raising the hull and preserving both the hull and the found items. Truly fascinating.

It's really hard to do it justice in a photo, because the lighting is poor, and most of the viewing galleries are behind glass. All of this is to preserve the ancient wood. A photograph also cannot capture the sheer scale of a vessel built around 500 years ago. Awe-inspiring.
