Borstal Institution 1908

This is the original entrance to the first of the juvenile establishments referred to as Borstals. The name comes from the nearby village. This is now renamed HMP Rochester and it's due to close in November for a major rebuild which will probably see this building being demolished - it isn't listed. A lot of good stuff happening in here but many of the buildings are not fit for use so the rebuild is overdue but it'll be a shame to lose this.

In looking to see if this is listed I also check HMP Maidstone - large lumps are listed including one wing and the entire wall and gatehouse; that makes closing the site and selling it a bit of a challenge.
