Tannery Road

I pass this sign every Tuesday and wonder how long ago there was a tannery in Tonbridge. Disappointed not to find any information on the internet I posted the sign on the "Tonbridge Daily" Facebook page. What a helpful lot there are out there on social media. Their responses are in extras. I particularly like  "It was called Baa lambs....we used to get Salt petre from there to make gunpowder. I was 13 at the time, so don't ask".  and also this one "An old friend of mine's father used to work there. Most people remembered the smell more than anything. Apparently, The poor man died from working there - he scraped the skins and in between would put the knife in between his teeth. His post mortem showed his belly was full of animal hair. Gruesome".   Most people commented on the smell!!
