St Augustine's Gate

This is the statue of Queen Bertha in Lady Wootton's Green, Canterbury made by Stephen Melton of Ramsgate. We were on a heritage weekend walk on the theme of Canterbury in the blitz. In the war Canterbury was a fortress town and there were tank traps here. The gate behind was damaged on the night of June 1st 1942 when a third of the city was destroyed in the last of the Baedeker raids. The lighter sandy coloured sections are the restored parts.
