Newlands Church

The location of this 16th century church is fabulous. It sits in the hamlet of Little Town (of "Mrs. Tiggy Winkle" fame) facing the horseshoe of impressive mountains which surround the Newlands Valley. It was the Vicar's young daughter, Lucie Carr, who inspired the character of Lucie in Beatrix Potter's tale in 1901.

The tiny schoolroom, to the left, was added in 1841, and remained in use until 1967. There would not have been room for many pupils!
