Highland Mary
Overlooking Dunoon pier is the statue of Highland Mary. She was Robert Burns' sweetheart who lived in Dunoon, Mary Campbell (1763-1786) also known as Bonny Mary O' Argyll is gazing down the Clyde towards the Ayrshire coast, towards where her love Robert Burns lived.
Burns was hoping to emigrate to Jamaica with Mary who had promised to go with him as his wife. She left Burns to go to spend the summer with her family in Campbeltown, where her brother was ill. She nursed him for a while then left for Dunoon. When she reached Greenock she became ill with the fever and died.
It was in 1896, the 100th anniversary of Burns death the statue was unveiled in Dunoon.
