Mourne Wall

We stayed in a wee campsite to the north of the Mourne Mountains, and it seemed a bit cool in the evening so we weren’t too surprised to find it had snowed. The extra shows the view in the morning of Slieve Commedagh, the second highest of the hills with its snow cover. We met our friends at Bloody Bidge and then drove back to the north where we went up Slieve Bearnagh, down to Hare’s Gap before the flog up Slieve Commedagh and then on up to northern Ireland’s highest hill, Slieve Donard. We basically followed the Mourne Wall once at the col before the first top, and despite the wind and odd wintry shower we were sheltered by the wall. The blip is of S, R and S descending from Slieve Donard looking south. The wall is high and wide, and designed to keep the riff-raff out of the catchment of Belfast’s water supply. Nowadays there are crossing points and open access. The Mournes are good and deserve a return trip.
