Northwest African American Museum

Today my good friend and I finally got to visit a place I've soooo long wanted to go to!  It was an idea proposed in 1981 by then Seattle Mayor Royer.....then in 1985 several activists occupied the old empty Colman school declaring it to be the desired site for this museum....and FINALLY  in 2001-2003 the Urban League purchased the property from the Seattle School District and the museum opened to the public in 2008!  Phew....and it's a dandy!!!  So much Northwest African American history telling all about the migration here from the south and where Blacks began to settle...here and in Portland and Tacoma for example.  Way too much information and art exhibits and historical exhibits to see here in a few hours so I will return!
This collage has a background of bluebells that , after the museum, we saw as we walked along a wooded trail nearby.  I've included the museum entrance in the middle--if you look close in the wee pic you'll see a selfie reflected ha ha,   also several block prints done by Daniel Minter telling differing stories.  His block prints were separated on the walls -they will be made into books eventually.  He carved out the prints on linoleum blocks, then transfers them and then paints them with acrylics.   I also included a mural done by Jeremy Gregory depicting African American culture and ethos in the PNW area. And also a little pic of the stamp he designed in 2004 depicting Kwanza. A very grand day to feed the soul artistically, culturally , and historically.   See Northwest African American Museum here
