Grade II Listed

The building on the right is The Roundhouse. It was designed by Daniel Alexander and built between 1809 and 1811. The visible windows were originally in a panopticon chapel; worshippers could see the priest but not each other. The lower floors were the Keeper's House. The tall wavy wall is also listed. It is of Kentish ragstone, about 20' high and contemporaneous. These are two parts of a larger group of listed buildings which are key parts of Maidstone prison and are part of the reason that it'll be a difficult nick to sell off. The Roundhouse is the centrepiece of the prison and it is surrounded by other wonderful architecture. Daniel Alexander also designed Dartmoor prison and he did non-prisony stuff too including Mote House in Maidstone

Obviously I took this from outside the prison - the wall and lamp in the foreground are part of The Old Sessions House which was built in 124 and is also listed.
