As I write the haar has descended so visibility is very poor.  Fortunately this morning it was just clear enough to see Bass Rock about four kilometres away as we walked along the cliffs and little beaches east of North Berwick.  The tide had recently turned so the extensive rock remains of ancient volcanic activity were evident at low water.  Several eider ducks waddled down the sand to swim off and warning cries from an oystercatcher alerted us to the possibility that we might accidentally tread upon camouflaged eggs laid in a scrape or on the rocks as we looked at the flowering thrift.  Then it was good to discard our warm jackets, hats and scarves and escape from the bitterly cold north easterly wind as we lunched with four friends. It had been a very enjoyable short walk in their company but regrettably we seldom meet up as two of them live over 300 miles away and the other in Canada.
This shows photos (in the extras) of the same walk in better weather.
