Plus ca change

Compare these two pictures.

The top one is a small section of a commercial postcard published over a hundred years ago.
It shows the steep Eastern slope of Arnside Knott made of limestone scree on which very little will grow.
But note the round black bushes. They are in fact small Yew trees.

Now look at the lower picture taken today and compare the size and position of the same small Yew trees.

Given the lack of soil they will never grow to be large trees. But given over 100 years between the two shots their tenacity is remarkable.
