Bailando el ceilidh a Godmanchester

At a wedding ceilidh I can only follow a one on, one off approach. A hundred drunk and flailing partygoers in cramped village halls can send the temperature skyrocketing. I must take periodic blasts of cool air outside and then resume proceedings with gusto.

My friends Hannah and Fede got married in her home town of Godmanchester near Huntingdon. Godmanchester reminds me of nearby St Ives with its wide sweep of the River Ouse and I have heard that this area was once the safest Tory seat in the country. It's very quaint and has a new beauty salon called 'Embellished Treatments', which as we walked to the reception stood out as a name lacking pizzazz.

Fede is Mexican and his parents barely speak any English, so as well as creative Mexican touches throughout, the ceremony and speeches were translated into Spanish in a lovely, informal and humorous way by a combination of bilingual guests. They are a great couple and that shines through.

Back in Cambridge late and after a cup of tea, de-suiting and debrief with friends Dave and Tracie I cycled home in the witching hour. It's eerily spooky but hauntingly still and beautiful down by the River Cam in the dead of night.
