The Sanctuary Knocker
Four old friends, who first met on a course in early 1988, having reunited at the station, checked-in the hotel, spent an hour or so blethering nineteen to the dozen, hit the town in balmy sunshine, wandering by the River Wear and through the market square up to the cathedral, whose entrance is enhanced by (a replica of) the famous Sanctuary Knocker.
Within the cathedral the choir was rehearsing for Choral Evensong to an audience of visitors transfixed by the purity of the sound and resonance of the organ - sadly recordings by camera are not allowed and transgressors are quietly reminded of such. (I've still got a couple of minutes' worth though, ha ha).
Much more wandering, blethering, laughter and comparisons of advancing decrepitude took place in the hours until bedtime.
