The Heave Awa Hoose

On 24 November 1861, 35 people were killed when a five storey tenement at Paisley Close on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh collapsed. The rescuers heard repeated calls for help as a young Joseph McIver tried to attract attention "Heave awa men/lads, I'm no deid yet." He was rescued, the only survivor.

The wording was translated to "Heave awa' chaps, I'm no' dead yet" to help Victorian tourists understand its meaning.
