Feeling Uneasy

Odd day. Last day here. Lot of travelling.
Emotional day.
Back to Hveragerdi in the morning. Steep climb up the valley with stern icy headwind repeatedly suggesting retreat. Didn't though and rewarded with sensual experience of bathing in a hot river - strong current gave full body massage, but neck and shoulders really got the best of it. Hot flat stone on solar plexus and arms draped around a couple of boulders kept my body anchored in the flow. Stayed an hour, two? Wasn't counting.
Back down the valley grinning all the way.
On the southern road back to Keflavik, saw lots of scenes like this. Tens upon tens of miles of flattish lava fields, no obvious flora or fauna save the occasional gull. Raised road, no barriers, mighty gusts pushing the car across the road without warning - no bending trees to give a visual or audible clue. A blackness and harshness all around. I was tired. I felt unnerved.
The appearance of Grindavik at the foot of a sudden, scary descent only added to the feeling. Through my jaundiced eyes the town looked an amalgam of Billingham, Grimsby and Area 51.
I didn't stop.
