What came first?

I was outside with the broom sweeping spiders webs away from the areas around the fireplace on the northwest side of the house..we never get any on the other sides of the house.   But before knocking this one away, I had to take a photo.   Did the spider build the web around that vine or did the vine grown through the web and make that hole?   The web is very tough and tightly built so I cannot imagine the vine breaking through but it sure looks that way.   I really don't think the spider would build a web around a vine. 

Nature is truly amazing!
