Tunnel End
SATURDAY
More partying with a wedding reception this evening at the Tunnel End Visitor Centre at Marsden.
The photo is of the entrance to the canal tunnel. During the day you can put on a hard hat and take a boat trip under the Pennine Moors.
There are actually four parallel tunnels - three railway tunnels and the canal tunnel running between Marsden (in God's own county) and Diggle (on the Dark Side).
The canal tunnel opened in 1811 and is the longest and oldest of the four and is also the longest and highest canal tunnel in the United Kingdom.
Of the railway tunnels, only the one built in 1894 is still used for rail traffic. If you have ever travelled between Leeds and Manchester on the Transpennine Express then you will have been through it.
