Tiny Warrior

She was small, but she was fierce!!   The nest held four big eggs (see extra) and she was defending it with her life!  If you look closely, you can see the tops of the eggs under her behind the grass.

We were riding on our favorite trail today, and we knew she had a nest near the bike path, but until today we didn't realize how close it was!   

Less than six inches from the pavement was the depression in the rocks where she had laid her eggs....it's amazing that any Killdeer ever survive!!!

Everyone gives her a wide berth, and the only reason I got a shot of the eggs is because she flew off when we first approached, but she settled right back on when we rode away!
