The Ploughman Poet

This statue of the Scottish Poet, Robert Burns, can be seen in the Auckland Domain, where I had a walk in the sun at lunchtime today. It seems that a number of epithets have been applied to Burns, including the Peasant Bard as is inscribed on the pedestal of the statue which is a copy of one found in Scotland.

Burns was born into a poor family; his father a tenant farmer. He followed his father, although he differed in that he wrote poetry. His work was informed by beliefs in the concepts of universal freedom, and the equality of all men (persons we would say now).

We need many more Burns' today, all saying loudly and persistently that greed, discrimination, and inequality are abomination before the people.
