"Francesca's Room" at Gradara Castle, Italy
The home of Paolo and Francesca
Another picturesque walled town, this time a small one close to the Adriatic and a major attraction to Italian tourists.
Why? Italians consider the story of Paolo and Francesca as one of the great love stories, notwithstanding its ending with the slaughter of the two main protagonists. The characters also make an appearance in hell in Dante's great "Comedy". (There is nothing at all divine about the book, this attribute was given to it after Dante's death.)
This is almost certainly NOT the room in which the slaughter - if any - took place.
And there is a charming, genuine Lucrezia Borgia room a few doors away.
