Quanice Hayes Tribute
The city council meeting this afternoon was dedicated to the memory of Quanice Hayes, murdered by Portland Police in February. The officer who killed the 17 year old African-American was found innocent by a Grand Jury. Grief, frustration, anger, and pleas that the Mayor restrain the police were expressed by the speakers. Kendall was invited to speak by Quanice's grandmother, Donna Hayes (pictured at Kendall's left). She began by asking the council members whether any of them had read The New Jim Crow, by Michelle Alexander. The book, published in 2010, documents the systemic racism in the United States, the increasing militarization of the police, and the school-to-prison pipeline for citizens of color. None of them had read it, so Kendall left her copy with Mayor so he could "do his homework."
