Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Camouflage

Many animals camouflage themselves by pretending to be something that they are not, perhaps dangerous or unpalatable.
This Clouded Border moth Lomaspilis marginata was hiding in our hedge this morning, awaiting nightfall. Its chances of being snapped up by a hungry bird are reduced by its wing pattern which mimics an unpalatable bird dropping.
The "extra" was going to be my blip, but then I found the moth. It is the flower of a perennial cornflower.
